        How we estimate detailing costs

        Regional pricing

Representative price ranges per region, built from typical detailing shop pricing tiers rather than a single national average.

        Vehicle size & condition

Size drives labor time; condition and age are separate, compounding adjustments – a well-kept older car isn’t priced the same as a neglected one. See our guide on what paint correction actually fixes for more on why condition matters so much.

        Climate & seasonal adjustments

Your climate tags and the current season shape both pricing and which add-ons the tool recommends – our guide on how often you should detail your car breaks this down by climate in more detail.

        Tax assumptions

U.S. estimates use average state sales tax; Canadian estimates apply GST, PST, or HST depending on province.

Disclaimer: All figures are estimates based on representative North American market data and are intended for planning purposes only.

Full Detail plus multi-stage paint correction and ceramic-prep-level finish work.

        Which add-ons are worth it?

The calculator’s Worth-It Panel personalizes this to your exact vehicle, but here’s the general pattern most detailing customers should expect.

        Almost always worth it

Clay bar treatment and paint decontamination – both address problems invisible until they’re gone, on nearly any vehicle.

        Depends on your situation

Ceramic coating prep (worth it if you’re keeping the car – see is ceramic coating worth it?) and leather treatment (worth it if leather shows wear).

        Often skippable

Fabric protection on a car you’re about to sell, or engine bay detailing on a vehicle you don’t show off.

        Glossary

        Clay bar
A resin-based bar dragged across lubricated paint to lift embedded contaminants a wash alone can’t remove.
        Paint decontamination
The broader process of removing bonded surface contamination (tar, rail dust, overspray) before any polish or coating step.
        Paint correction
Machine polishing to reduce swirl marks, light scratches, and oxidation – distinct from, and a prerequisite to, ceramic coating.
        Ceramic coating preparation
Decontamination and correction work done specifically so a ceramic coating bonds to a flawless, contaminant-free surface.
        Swirl marks
Fine circular scratches, usually from improper washing/drying technique, visible mainly in direct sunlight.
        Sealant vs. wax
Sealants are synthetic and typically last longer (3–6 months); waxes are natural, offer a warmer look, but need more frequent reapplication.

        Frequently asked questions

How much should car detailing actually cost?

It depends heavily on package, vehicle size, and region – this calculator’s confidence score tells you how reliable a given estimate is for your exact situation.

What’s the difference between a wash and a detail?

A wash cleans the surface; a detail restores and protects it, addressing things a wash can’t – embedded contaminants, oxidation, interior wear.

Is paint correction the same as ceramic coating?

No – paint correction fixes existing surface flaws; ceramic coating protects the (corrected) surface afterward. Coating over uncorrected paint just seals in the flaws.

Which add-ons are worth paying for on an older car?

This varies by condition, not just age – a well-maintained older car may need less correction work than a younger car with poor upkeep. The calculator’s recommendations are condition-driven for this reason.

How often should I get my car detailed?

Most vehicles benefit from a full detail twice a year, with more frequent attention in harsh climates (road salt, coastal air, heavy dust).

        Does this estimate include tax?

Yes, by default – you can toggle it off to see the pre-tax price instead.

        Can I share my results?

Yes – every selection saves to the page URL in real time, so you can copy and share your exact result.

What’s the difference between a bundle discount and buying add-ons separately?

Selecting 3 or more compatible add-ons in one visit unlocks a 10% discount on their combined price, reflecting how many real shops bundle multiple services. Buying fewer than 3 add-ons prices each one individually with no discount.

Why does my vehicle’s condition affect the price so much?

Condition and age are separate, compounding factors. A vehicle in Poor condition typically needs more correction labor regardless of age, while a well-kept older vehicle can cost close to baseline, the calculator accounts for both independently rather than assuming age alone predicts condition.

What does the Worth It, Situational, or Skip rating mean?

Each add-on is rated based on your specific vehicle, condition, and climate: Worth It means it’s likely to deliver clear value, Situational means it depends on factors like how long you’re keeping the vehicle, and Skip means it’s unlikely to matter much for your situation right now.
